We decided last time to read "Breaking with Consensus Reality."

http://www.crimethinc.com/blog/2012/04/23/breaking-with-consensus-reality/

From the text:

"We who fight to create a freer world face a fundamental contradiction. On one hand, we don’t want to become a vanguard, “leading” or imposing our will on others, as that would run counter to our anti-authoritarian values. On the other hand, we believe with good justification that our political goals—including the destruction of capitalism, the state, and hierarchy—can’t be accomplished without strategies that are currently unpalatable to most of our fellow citizens. The impoverishment of millions and the destruction of our ecosystems demand that we act decisively. What criteria will equip us to challenge these systems without resorting to the authoritarian means we condemn?"

We also discussed that after this meeting we will study "Call "(L'Appel) which can be read here:

Re: Reading Group: Breaking with Consensus Reality

its not a value judgment. I am simply expressing a desire for more of it.

"I hope though that we can start to take the conversations beyond what the text says and more into how we can do it in life and outside of theory or at least how it applies to what we have done in life. ya know?"

Do you think this doesn't happen at the reading groups? Personally, I think the drive of most of the reading group conversations is to do this. This is a healthy impulse but, if taken too far, can be a serious mistake. It is good to think about things outside of the "pragmatic" context of applicatio0n, sometimes. This allows us to develop tools for analyzing the world removed from a particular situation - tools we may use throughout our lives.

I love the reading group. It's been an interesting point of entry for folks who maybe wouldn't go to other "introductory" anarchist projects. I would like to see people outreach more for it.

Re: Reading Group: Breaking with Consensus Reality

yea! these reading groups have been going strong and getting about 15 - 20 people each time. the initial group had around 30 even.  Spread the word. Bonds are being created and opinions shared, It is vital that we talk IRL and learn what others think so we can connect. This was a great idea to restart and despite some internet troll hate I think the fact that it is continually pulling people out means its something we desire.

I hope though that we can start to take the conversations beyond what the text says and more into how we can do it in life and outside of theory or at least how it applies to what we have done in life. ya know?

Sure is to me. Regardless, the piece is full of awesome insights. I'd love to talk about it with you at the study group.

Re: Reading Group: Breaking with Consensus Reality

Isn't using the word  "citizen"  self-inclusively  like that an anarchist faux pas?
