Anarchist report from Ferguson

Several people have asked me to write about what I found in Ferguson today. Here is my brief dehydrated tired scribble before bed. Do not judge me I literally just typed this out.

Grief, pride and anger is the short answer.

Episode #5: Still Not Lovin'the Police

An Atlanta Anarchist Assembly

Date/Time:
Sat, 07/06/2013 - 5:00pm - 7:00pm
Location:
Coan Park
1530 Woodbine Ave SE
Atlanta, GA
United States

There hasn't been an assembly in a while but it seems like time to for another...

Since the last assembly there has been an extreme rise in fascism in the state and in the country. In Atlanta alone there was a NSM/KKK rally and now there are flyers around Georgia State University calling for the creation of a White Student Union. There has been a lot of talk on the internet and in-person about what should be done and perhaps an assembly is needed to bring everyone together to figure out what can be done.

Also, George Zimmerman has a large chance of being aquitted in the coming week. How will anarchists, anti-capitalists, and anti-authorians respond to that?

Lastly, there have been several insurrections happening all over the world - Turkey, Brazil, and Egypt (once again)

Anarchist Discussion Group: Social Centers + Radical Spaces Part II

Date/Time:
Sun, 06/23/2013 - 5:00pm - 7:00pm
Location:
Park ABOVE Decatur Marta Station
400 Church Street

This week's discussion will be about space and what use it has for anarchists. Specifically, what use would the Atlanta Social Center have? More generally, what use do other spaces such as Occupy Atlanta have? Are they revolutionary? Can we make them so?

This will be part II of last week's discussion. We are continuing it as most had to leave early for the Atlanta Zine Fest and the discussion didn't feel finished. If you couldn't make it last week please feel welcome to join us. This is an informal discussion group. Just bring yourself and your ideas or vegan popsicles if you happen to have any extra and feel like sharing.

Also please bring ideas on what you would like to read / discuss for next time.

Location: Park literally ABOVE the Decatur Marta Station. Its diagonal and to the left of Java Monkey. We will have it at Java Monkey if it rains.

Hey y'all,

At the last Anarchist Reading Group we decided to expand our group into a "reading group" and a "discussion group" alternating between the two as needed. Not everything we want to discuss can be found in a book after all.

This week we decided to have a discussion about the usefulness of space to Anarchists. Specifically, what use would the Atlanta Social Center have? More generally, what do other spaces offer radicals such as Occupy Atlanta? Are they revolutionary? Can we make them so?

New location: Its the park literally ABOVE the Decatur Marta Station. Its across the street from Java Monkey, diagonal to the left. We will have the event at Java Monkey if it rains. Look for the people in black.

Hope to see you there!

Reading Group: Breaking with Consensus Reality

Date/Time:
Sun, 05/12/2013 - 5:00pm - 7:30pm
Location:
Java Monkey Coffee
Decatur
Atlanta, GA
United States

We decided last time to read "Breaking with Consensus Reality."

http://www.crimethinc.com/blog/2012/04/23/breaking-with-consensus-reality/

From the text:

"We who fight to create a freer world face a fundamental contradiction. On one hand, we don’t want to become a vanguard, “leading” or imposing our will on others, as that would run counter to our anti-authoritarian values. On the other hand, we believe with good justification that our political goals—including the destruction of capitalism, the state, and hierarchy—can’t be accomplished without strategies that are currently unpalatable to most of our fellow citizens. The impoverishment of millions and the destruction of our ecosystems demand that we act decisively. What criteria will equip us to challenge these systems without resorting to the authoritarian means we condemn?"
