Evicting The American Dream

Video

At 3:00 AM on May 2nd, 2012, between 20 and 25 DeKalb County deputy's raided a home in a quite neighborhood in South East DeKalb County. Was it a raid on a major drug dealer? Was it a manhunt for a wanted felon? Or was this the location of a local criminal gang? No no and no. It was the home of 63 year old Chris Frazer, her 83 year old mother, her daughter and 4 year old grandson. DeKalb County Sheriff Deputy's had arrived at 3:00 AM to evict this family from the home they had lived in for over 15 years. Even though Ms. Frazer had a lawsuit in federal court alleging fraud against Investors One Corp., the company claiming to hold her mortgage, none of that mattered. Someone had convinced a judge to sign eviction papers, and the Frazer family was being put out.

Anti-Foreclosure Cookout in the Old 4th Ward

Boulevard-Angier Park
Boulevard NE and Angier Ave NE

Since December 6th, 2011, the Pittman Family home on Glen Iris Dr in the Old 4th Ward has been occupied by Occupy Atlanta. The Pittmans were the victims of a predatory loan and have had their home of four generations foreclosed on. Occupiers have been organizing in the neighborhood by canvassing, fliering, and holding family friendly cookouts.

Saturday February 11th, 2012 will be our second cookout, this time in the park at the corner of Angier and Boulevard. There will be free food and childcare provided! This is an opportunity for activists and community members to meet and build connections. Bring a dish, bring an instrument, bring your kids, and have fun while defending against foreclosure and eviction!

End Eviction: A Call for Solidarity in the Fight Against Chase Bank

The Pittman family has been in their home since 1953. Chase Bank took advantage of the 62 year old retiree, Eloise Pittman, who owned the home at 404 Glen Iris. Shortly after receiving notice that her home had been foreclosed on, Mrs. Pittman passed away due to pancreatic cancer and hypertension.

Now Chase is taking away the home in which Mrs. Pittman passed away, the only home the Pittman Family has ever known.

We have attempted to negotiate with Chase Bank, but they refused, offering the family two options; either buy the house back from the bank or accept the ‘Cash for Keys’ offer of $2,500.

Occupy Atlanta Disrupts Forclosure Auction

On December 6th, 2011, Occupy Atlanta (OA) disrupted the auctioning of foreclosed homes. On the first Tuesday of every month, from 10am to 4pm, on the steps of the Fulton County Courthouse, stolen homes are sold to investors, speculators, landlords, and anybody looking for cheap property. OA protestors created noise with drums, whistles, harmonicas, bullhorn, clapping hands, and shouting. For most of the auction the protestors were so loud that firms representing banks were unable to effectively do business.

Unfortunately, one protester was arrested before Fulton County Sheriff and the stairs were cleared of anybody suspected of being with OA. At one point, Indymedia reporters were harassed by police and told to leave the stairs while corporate news outlets were allowed to remain.

Bank of America Protest

Date/Time:
Tue, 01/25/2011 - 3:30pm
Location:
600 Peachtree Street Northeast
Atlanta, GA

Atlanta Defends Dissent is organizing a protest at the Bank of America HQ building on JANUARY 25TH, AT 3:30 PM. Foreclosures are through the roof in Atlanta. In this blood-red state it is no surprise that tenants have very few rights in the way of not having their liveliehood stripped from them and their families.
We are sick of this endemic greed.
