GSU: Anti-Racist Meet-Up

Date/Time:
Sat, 08/17/2013 - 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Location:
GSU Courtyard
Courtland on Georgia State Campus, downtown
Atlanta, GA
United States

This Spring, racist fliers have appeared around Georgia State campus announcing the creation of a "white student union." The group, which seeks to become a racist organization on campus, hides behind the tired rhetoric of "cultural celebration" and nationalism.

In June, a group of anti-racists held an assembly to discuss this matter in Coan Park. The group was several dozen people and decided to organize for another meet-up on campus for August 17th.

This meeting will, we hope, be a space to discuss the facts of the situation and to begin to organize a strategic fight against white supremacy on campus and in Atlanta.

Social Center Legal Meeting

At the last social center open meeting, it was decided by consensus to separate the legal meetings from the “main” meetings in order to save time and space for accomplishing work around other subjects. This is largely due to the high volume of research and discussion that is necessary to determine the social center’s legal status.

Town Hall Discussion on Queer-Bashing, Self-Defense

Video

See video

Recently a "town hall meeting" came together to discuss homophobia, hate crimes, and the case of Luke O'Donovan.

On New Year's Eve, a queer teen, Luke O'Donovan, was jumped by a violent mob who called him homophobic slurs and beat him. He was stabbed in the back, and acted in self-defense to save his life. He was arrested at the hospital and is being charged with aggravated assault, while all of his attackers are walking free. The corporate media accused Luke of going on an unprovoked "stabbing spree" - much like recent mass shootings - and made no mention of the queer-bashing which forced Luke to defend himself.

At the time of publishing, Luke has been released from jail, but still faces multiple felony charges. For up-to-date information: http://letlukego.com/
