A coalition dedicated to opening a radical social center in Atlanta will be holding a potluck and open meeting on Saturday, December 1 at 7:45pm.

This meeting will be dedicated to updating the supporters of this social center on the work that has been done so far by those who are dedicated to the project. We will offer ways for others to plug in–both for those who would like to commit and become part of the team that is dedicated to this project, and for those who would like to help but can’t fully commit to helping plan for and operate the center. This will also be a space for input, so if you have concrete, developed ideas or questions about the center, please bring them to this meeting.

Specifically, we will discuss:

Bank Withdraws Attempt to Arrest Sherrye Calhoun

The war is not over, but a battle has been won.

On October 23rd, 2012, Sherrye Calhoun received a letter stating that Eric Bender had applied for an arrest warrant against her on the grounds of trespassing in her own home of 30 years. Sherrye defiantly moved back into her home after being evicted on August 3, so while it was expected that the police would eventually return to harass her at the bank’s command, the letter nevertheless came as a surprise.

After receiving the letter, rather than sit back and wait for the courts to side with the banks–as they did time and time again in her earlier legal battles–she picked up the phone and contacted her friends, neighbors, and new allies to help her continue the fight for her home.

Bank Threatens Sherrye Calhoun with Arrest

Sherrye Calhoun has lived in her home for 30 years. After seeking help several years ago to keep making payments on her mortgage, she was swindled out of her home. She has been fighting to stay there ever since.

On the morning of Friday, August 3, Dekalb County Sherriff Brown’s deputies evicted Ms. Calhoun from her home, giving her enough time to grab her purse. Sheriff Brown is not new to evictions. He recently evicted Christine Frazer, 63, and her 85-year-old mother at gunpoint in an illegal 3 a.m. eviction.

Join us in paying a visit to Eric Bender for his role in evicting and harassing Sherrye Calhoun! After repeatedly harassing Sherrye at her home, offering her “cash for keys,” trying to trick her into moving out on false promises, and finally evicting her, he has now filed a criminal arrest warrant application against her for “trespassing” in her own home!

The more people who are able to show up to visit Eric Bender, the better. He left Sherrye alone for almost three months the last time we paid him a visit
and phoneblasted him. So this time, we're doing him the courtesy of visiting him again. Join the event here and tell everyone you know. Here is the address:

Emergency Meeting to Stop Eviction & Arrest of Sherrye Calhoun

Date/Time:
Wed, 10/24/2012 - 8:30pm
Location:
119 Wyman ST SE
Atlanta, GA
United States

Super short notice, I know, and I apologize - it might not even be functional to make an event for this but I'm trying to get the word out.
We're holding an emergency meeting at Dank House tonight at 8:30pm.
(That's 119 Wyman ST SE)

Many of us from the community and milieu were around to help Sherrye move back into her home of 30 years after an eviction attempt that took place a few months back.
This is exactly the sort of thing we should be doing however, Eric Bender has now filed an arrest warrant against Sherrye Calhoun and she is due in magistrate court on Nov second.

We gotta remember that the situation Sherrye is in was one that was created collectively so we owe it to her to follow through and defend her and her home.
