The time is November, 2003.  George Bush is in the middle of his first term in office.  And Miami has been selected to host the meeting of the F.T.A.A., or the Free Trade Agreement of the America's.  This trade deal is sold as a way to open new markets in Cental and South America, create jobs, and "liberalize" trade rules.  Critics believe that the F.T.A.A.  is nothing less than a way to transfer soverenty

This is part 2 of our evening with Greg Palast in Atlanta on December 15th, 2011.

  • 2/17/2012 - Anonymous

On Valentine's Day, 2011, CWA members, Teamsters, Jobs with Justice, Clergy, Union supports, and Occupy Atlanta members paid a visit to AT&T in Atlanta to ask for a Valentine gift, "Show some Love, Stop the Layoffs!".  AT&T had recently announced that they will be laying off 740 union workers in the South East region, 95 of those layoffs here in Georgia. At the same time, AT&T CEO Randall Stevenson received $27,000,000 in compensation in 2011.  At a time when Georgia is facing double digit unemployment and has one of the nations highest foreclosures rates, layoffs of good paying union jobs is the last thing the state needs. So on Valentines Day, CWA supports came together to demand that AT&T stop the lay offs and show their employees the dignity they deserve.

On February 12th, 30 hooligans descended on DeKalb County Jail. We came to scream and cry out in solidarity with a jailed comrade who's bond had been posted the previous day but who was, nonetheless, still incarcerated; all of this in the face of the general asphyxiation which characterizes the prevailing Social Peace.

    • At first there were only a few of us...

Upon approaching the Jail, we were met immediately with the waving of just a few inmates. The faint knocking on the glass was exciting. The large bass drum picked up a beat as the 15 of us began chanting.

"Burn this fucker down, Atlanta wants a free town!"

Eloise Pittman bought her home at 404 Glen Iris Dr in 1953. After working in the education system for years, she finally settled in to a life of retirement. At 62 years old, Chase approved her for a $312,000 loan. This loan would have cost her a million dollars to repay. As a senior living on a fixed income she never should have been offered this loan in the first place. The bank gave her this predatory loan knowing she wouldn’t be able to pay it back.

As we planned this sit-in February 9, the Occupiers of 404 Glen Iris Drive, we stayed up nights at a time gathering and putting ideas together. For some odd reason, I couldn’t really stay up listening to ideas and planning a night or so behind bars, so I left the meetings to pray to God, talk to my grandma, and go on off to sleep while the occupiers stay up from sun down to sun up planning any type of win for my house. Thursday night at 12 turns into Friday, the day of the action. I can’t sleep with my mind running off almost everything.

On December 15th, 2011, BBC investigative reporter Greg Palast stopped in Atlanta during his U.S. speaking tour promoting his new book. Mr. Palast has been tracking and investigating some of America's sleasiest 1%, the oilmen and investment bankers who scour the world for new sources of petroleum and profit's. One source of new profits is buying the debt of under developed countries for pennies on the dollar, then squeezing that money out of those countries once they emerge from civil wars or dictatorships. With a combination of humor and passion, Mr. Palast untangles a global web of greed and corruption within oil companies, governments, bankers, regulators, intelligence organizations and makes complex schemes easy to understand. His talk is followed by a Q and A, and in total runs about 85 minutes.

Brain Allen was one of the protestors known as the Chase 8 who were arrested Friday morning during a sit-in at a local Chase branch on Edgewood. The sit-ins were part of the escalation against Chase Bank in the fight to prevent imminent eviction of a home in the Old Fourth Ward belonging to the Pittman family. Bonds were posted for the eight at 2:30pm on Friday however, Dekalb County policy prevents the jail from accepting a bond until the inmates fingerprints have cleared. 10 hours after being arrested, the fingerprint process began. Brian’s prints were never cleared due to a mistake made by employees and as others began to be let free, he headed to the housing floor.

Many people will celebrate Valentines day with their true loves with a special dinner.  I'm sure most men will give their sweethearts a heart shaped box of chocolates.  To show your love for your sweetheart, friends, and family you should help americans in their dream for single payer health insurance.  So instead of rushing to the store for chocolates you should rush  to the internet site of ( Single Payer Action ) and to your sweet delight you will find that they want to have a government run single payer health insurance.  This single payer health insurance that ( Single Payer Action ) wants will have no co-pays, deductibles or bills.  All american citizens will be in this health insurance plan and nobody will be left out.  Now isn't that a sweet thought for valentines day?

Thursday afternoon proved successful in the construction of 8 garden beds.

7 adults, 2 toddlers and a puppy named Zues joined forces to till, de-stone, and play around in a medium-sized garden in a residential community of Marietta. About 4 hours worth of work made for a very satisfactory accomplishment and was well rewarded with Vegan Chili, cranberry juice, and all natural Muenster cheese for our non-vegans.

The next step for this urban farm will be blending the dense Georgia clay with sand, compost, and possibly lime to balance the ph. The garden will be as organic as possible as PureEnergy does not need chemical additives to flourish.

This is an example of the ease it takes to help a neighbor construct a garden. Ask your neighbors if they would like a garden, as there are many people who would love to sweat a little for a future of both community and independance.

Today, February 10th, 2012, Occupy Atlanta and Take Back the Block sat in at the Chase Bank located in the Edgewood Retail District. This action is part of a larger campaign against Chase Bank in getting the deed back from Chase to the Pittman family. Carmen Pittman, the granddaughter of the late Eloise Pittman, was arrested along with seven others. This was the first time--since the occupation movement shifted its focus to foreclosure--that a homeowner was involved in direct action. They are now known as the Chase Eight.

This is written to introduce to Atlanta our organization, The League of Distinguished Gentlemen. We are dedicated to mentoring young boys in Atlanta who don't have their father at home, or have a father figure period. We are here to offer them role models that they can touch, or sit down and talk to. We're here to show them that all role models aren't entertainers and athletes who they can only admire from afar. Our goal is to raise upstanding, productive young MEN! Enough of the pants hanging off of their butts. We're here to make them pull up their pants and get themselves together. We'll be having our inaugural fundraiser soon. The entire city is invited.

(This letter was initially intended to be read at a recent meeting, which was about the
"black bloc" action my partner and I called for at our home. I have not altered the letter to appear in indy media.

As context to outsiders: Francis had been living in our home for two months and was never on the lease. Additionally, V and I have been part of the radical activist community for over a year. I feel there is further necessary information to include, however, I have mixed feelings about bringing a domestic dispute into a public sphere.)

     Hey everyone,

What is required for us to create a space where people feel that they can tell their stories, the hard stories, the ones that have changed our lives forever?  Trust, compassion, openess, willingness, deep listening, queit, attention, offereing a story first or in exchange, empathy, respect, oneness.

How would it feel to release a story to a group where you felt trust and really be heard?

How about to hear them tell it back?

How about the transpersonal transformative process of acting it out or even watching another act it out as part of a theatre of life?

What if your community came out to enjoy a production that celebrated these lives and the stories that we have horrendous and life changing as they may be?

There has been alot of talk about the recent legislation called the National Defense Authorization Act.  Many believe the act gives this President, and/or future Presidents the ability to use the military in America to arrest, and jail indefinetly, without charges or a trial, American citizens.  The President simply has to declare a person a threat to "national security" and that person can be imprisoned, no right to lawyer, a jury, a hearing, evidence, witnesses, habis appeals....nothing.

‘It’s like a burning building. No one really wants to jump. No one thinks that it won’t be painless.
But jumping is better than being burnt alive.’
    ‘I’m afraid I can’t let you go.’
‘But I know how to take care of myself.’
    ‘I don’t think that’s true.’
That short conversation was what landed me in a mental hospital.
They locked me in a room that had two chairs, a pile of phones, half of them did not want, and a guard was positioned outside in case I tried to leave. They gave me heavy tranquilizers two hours into my official stay.

My first morning in the mental hospital started at 6.30 AM, when a smiling young 20-something physically pulled me out of my room for ‘vitals’ (temperature, weight, blood pressure.)

This is an open letter in response to the actions on the evening of Tuesday February 1st 2012 at the residence of V, Chelsea and Francis.

We, Olly, Andre, Jessie, Kalilah, Drea, Martina, Steve, and Francis, members of a local radical queer community, experienced direct intimidation, as well as its ripple effects, by members of the anarchist and anarcho-feminist communities.

We recognize the experiences of all the people involved in the altercation that sparked the actions of Feb 1st. We also recognize that altercation between V, Chelsea & Francis existed prior to the events of that evening. We have no intention of debating those experiences. This is a letter in response to the violent tactics used by members of the anarchist community in the form of a Black Bloc.

On Saturday the 28th of January, we marched against the police. Some shit got vandalized including a MARTA station window and a police station.

Besides the recent string of police murders in Atlanta, we were motivated by a recognition that police accountability is impossible, that police exist only to protect the rich and powerful, that the state refuses to listen to polite or reasonable discourse, and that rage is the only language these pigs understand. Any continuation of racist, sexist, homophobic, or any other oppressive violence from the police will only fan the flames of anti-police sentiments in the city and should be expected to be met with retaliation.

On December 1st, 2011, a determained group of activists set out from the Martin Luther King Jr. Monument in Washington D.C. and walked, 750 miles, to Atlanta, Ga.  Their goal was to teach, and listen to people, about the occupy movement, income inequality, who really controls congress, and what can be done to regain control of our democracy and the future.  After 60 days on the road, they arrived in Atlanta.  After spending the night at Peachtree and Pine shelter, they attended the Sunday Sermon at Ebinezer Baptist Church, and received a heartwarming applause from those in attendance who heard about their journey.  Then, they stepped across the street to the Martin Luther King Jr. Tomb, their finial destination, and gave a press conference about their experiences on the road between Washington and Atlanta.  This film is our report from that press conference.

195 James HodgeOver the past month protesters have noticed strange men hovering around Occupy Atlanta related protests and filming the events. It's not unusual for lots of cameras to be present at these events, but these people stood out. It was very obvious that they were with law enforcement.

One officer in particular had initially refused to identify himself, but after a nod from white-shirt APD officer C.W. Moss he eventually identified himself as James Hodge.

In the past 4 months, police in the metro Atlanta area have been responsible for the deaths of at least 7 people. On January 28th 2012 around 8pm members of the Atlanta activist community, clad in black, wearing gloves, masks and hoods, began to converge on Troy Davis Park. They were gathering to march in opposition to policing. A call out had been made for a "Fuck the Police march", in solidarity with Oakland, upon the reinstatement of Luther "Machine Gun" Lewis, the Union City police officer who killed 19 year old father, son, brother Arriston Waiters. The call out was basically a mimicking of the Oakland call out and shared the same guidelines which allowed for the destruction of bank and state property.

On Saturday, January 28th an Atlanta march in solidarity with the Oakland Commune titled "From Oakland to Atlanta: Fuck the Police" ended in three arrests.

The march was roughly 50 people at its biggest and was surrounded by reinforced banners. During the march, anti-cop graffiti was written on a police station window and a MARTA station had a window smashed out (in October of 2011 a MARTA police officer killed 19 year old Joetavious Stafford). Debris was dragged into the street to disrupt police pursuit.

At the end of the march, participants dispersed in multiple directions and 3 were arrested. They are being charged with jaywalking and obstruction of traffic.

A fundraising party is scheduled for tomorrow in Atlanta and solidarity actions would be appreciated elswhere.

    More to come.

This is the latest update in the battle between the Pittman family and Chase Bank.  After many attempts at negotiating, the bank has refused to budge.  Chase is still demanding the Pittman family pay $400,000 for their home which is now worth $100,000., or get out.  Both options are unacceptable to both the Pittman's and Occupy Atlanta, whose members have lived in the Pittmans front yard since Dec. 6th of 2011.  What Eloise Pittman got when she refinanced her home in 2006 was a classic predatory loan, a loan Chase Bank knew she could never pay pack.  The loan was really designed to siphon off Ms. Pittman's savings, retirement money, and eventually her home.  Chase Banks loan was more like a money vacuum sucking up Ms. Pitman's life savings and sending it to Chase CEO Jamie Dimon.
