Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

Today, April 9th 2013, there was a riot in Edgewood, a neighborhood northeast of downtown Atlanta. The area is almost entirely residential and is about a year behind in the ongoing gentrification of Atlanta.

Around fifty people gathered for a "March Against the Police" with drums, banners, and a desire for vengeance at the playground in Edgewood Courts, an apartment complex in the back of the neighborhood. Edgewood Courts contains some of the few remaining low income housing units in Atlanta. Yesterday, the police pepper sprayed a group of kids and beat and arrested a man grieving over his lost father.

The march started off slowly — a few people started chanting All cops are bastards / Fuck the police! as drumming began. As the crowd left the complex, some people lined the streets, looking on. People walked up behind the complex toward the front of the neighborhood. As the first cop car approached, more and more people joined in. At first, the crowd seemed apprehensive about what to do,  but all of a sudden something clicked. Contrary to most situations, the presence of the police did not act as a deterrent. Instead, the crowd became more excited and angry as the cops approached.  A bottle was thrown at a police car and the momentum and joy picked up. What ensued was something that we will never forget. People began kicking the cop car and chased it away when it began to retreat. One pig gone. Cheers and chants filled the air as the crowd, feeling emboldened, decided to keep going.

The riot proceeded away from the Courts and the police started to put more distance between themselves and the crowd. The intensity grew as numbers swelled, fluctuating between 75 and 100+. The crowd blocked off the main entrance to the Courts, refusing to let the police drive down. What happened next could not have been anticipated.

A cop car was stopped at one of the central intersections in Edgewood. People quickly approached the squad car, even going so far as to lean in the window to shout at the cops while others banged on the side of the car. More and more people drew closer, eventually circling the car. Once it was successfully blocked and the pigs inside were intimidated, they tried to leave.  The crowd joyfully sent them off with rocks, sticks, and even basketballs to speed the process. People cried out in excitement, leaping into the air for high-fives and hugs. Throughout the event not a single person made a plea for the police. It was clear the police were our common enemy.

On the way back to the apartment complex, people noticed an unmarked car coming toward the crowd up a sidestreet. People immediately responded by running toward the car and letting loose a rainstorm of pebbles, and then rocks, and then bricks. The cops threw their car into reverse and exited the area as fast as they could. Laughing, the crowd ran back down to the Courts and broke apart. A number of cop cars began circling throughout the apartments but left after people continued to throw projectiles, including a hammer, at the cops. Some kids, who had to be under 10, were even letting stones fly at cops.

All in all the police were forced to retreat 4 times — leaving the neighborhood completely.  The crowd of people never backed down. An arrest occurred just outside of the neighborhood after the event; it is unclear if it is related.

There's a war on between the Edgewood residents and the cops, and the conflict is only escalating. Anger and riotous joy is the response to frequent harrassment. The day before this event the police attempted to manage a crowd of people outside the apartment complex and were met with rowdy resistance. Three people were arrested, but not one went down easy. The cops have been upping their patrols around Edgewood recently, but tonight, there aren't any squad cars on the street.

Re: Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

Like...was this real resistance? The news, who I trust, says that it was obviously something but my marxist friends, who I also trust, say that although they weren't there it probably wasn't real based on the writing style of the above piece.

I don't know what to think. I hate actual uprisings when they happen - always a source of privilege; real oppressed people demand shitty reforms piecemeal (black cops, black snitches, black  mayors etc.) - and I love erasing the real struggle of people of color, but I also trust the news and the marxists and they are giving conflicting accounts. Aghhhh

Re: Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

it is bullshit.  nothings happening. i watched the news.  my friend wasnt there but says its bullshit as well

Re: Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

"For every action, especially against the police, there is going to be a violent and vindictive reaction, and innocent or naive people who did not participate may suffer because of them."

It's true that actions compel reactions, but I'm not sure that it's helpful to us to temporalize in this way. This type of responsive, increased repression is inevitable and must be navigated for every moment of resistance. It defines the environment we live in, and this environment is hostile to us. Part of recognizing the enemy as an environment means recognizing every one as part of it (including "innocent" people, who by this account are not so innocent), and recognizing that actions alter the landscape. Actions polarize people and reveal a situation in which the stakes are high. This is the danger of destabilization-but resistance is a destabilizng move. The only way to approach "reactive" repression is to keep moving forward, to think strategically, to find each another, to move together: to be careful with one another so we can be dangerous together.

Also posted on OA'a facebook:

There are lots of police in the neighborhood this morning...

This is the reason that I disagree with some of the tactics that some people are using. It ALWAYS increases police presence in an area, and it often pisses them off. It's like poking a snake
(or a bear) with a stick.

I'm not trying to tell people what to do or what not to do (because people wouldn't listen anyway) and I'm not trying to criticize or start a fight with people who DO support those tactics, but I just wanted to give a friendly reminder/warning...

If you are REALLY trying to wage war on the police, remember that they outgun you, outnumber you, and 'outorganize' you. They have the support of the state and the support of a very large portion of the population. Although lots of citizens disagree with a lot of the laws that the police enforce, (as well as the heavy-handidness that they often use to enforce them) they DO support the concept of having an organization designated to enforce laws and 'protect the public.'

Do what you want. I'm not trying to police your actions. Just remember that for every action, especially against the police, there is going to be a violent and vindictive reaction, and innocent or naive people who did not participate may suffer because of them.

Like I said- not trying to start a fight. Just making an observation. I took a stroll through the neighborhood today and was blatantly followed and monitored by (definitely) 2 uniformed officers and  2 (probably) plain clothes. Although I did not participate in the actions, I am experiencing the clampdown that is following it.

Not officially but there has been social media comments diminishing the maginitude of the event to out of towners and locals who are peripheral

Re: Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

isn't there some anarchist discussion panel happening, somebody should give a report on this cuz it sounds like this is relevant to what @'s are doing / can do / can support in ATL.

Re: Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

Have they posted the counternarrative anywhere?

Re: Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

this is almost not worth posting but to atlanta's irrevelant leftist cultist sects who have been spreading a counterrevolutionary reactionary narrative about what occurred on last night.

riot:

  1. violent disturbance: a public disturbance during which a group of angry people becomes noisy and out of control, often damaging property and acting violently.
  2. great display: a spectacular visual display
  3. something extremely enjoyable: a social occasion, event, or experience that people enjoy in a wild, noisy, and energetic

when the police and local media use the words inciteful to describe a situation. when police retreat in order to let a situation cool off that is s riot. residents in edgewood organized themselves and attacked the police. what happened wasnt a group of "outsiders" going in and playing not my town. it was a coordinated effort and out right attack against the police.

read the fucking articles and get off of your fucking high horses and step out of your religious worship of outdated communist dogma. police are quoted saying they were afraid and media published the word riot in their articles. dumb ass leninists will always be irrelevent in the us.

Fuck the Pigs. Fuck the Left.

Re: Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

Has there been any action toward forming a jail support group for those who were arrested?

Re: Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

If this thing happened years ago great. good thing its happening again. perhaps it wont stop this time perhaps it will spread.

angry leninists wanta get mad that they couldnt organize it. people revolted on thier own terms not because someone made them or said the time was now.

who really thinks people are gonna let people they dont know go in and make them riot. THAT IS DUMB.

Re: Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

@1046

lolz who cares there was a RIOT. News media says the neighborhood did it. Obviously no one thinks they organized it. Get over yourself.

Re: Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

this kind of thing is actually nothing new to this neighborhood.... before the white punks and anarchists moved to this area it was common for police cars and ambulences to be pelted with bricks and rocks when they came through the area.  sometimes even shot at.  it's cool, yeah, but be careful to not to assume that any of this is necessarily the result of anarchist agitation in the neighborhood.  This area was buckwild and extremely hostile to the police long before you guys moved in.

Re: Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

Edgewood is SOUTHeast of downtown Atlanta.

Re: Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

Why wait until they kill someone? I mean they already have anyways. Anybody in that neighborhood could have been the next victim any day anyways. Whats an interesting factor is the shear number of victims in each recent incident in Edgewood. Whole crowds pepper prayed at once, with a large number of them being children.

I mean, did you see that canister of spray that pig let loose! It hung in the air for a good 15 minutes at least. Nasty chemical weapons!

Re: Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

What's more remarkable is that nobody was even killed first.

Re: Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

you idiots. how can we organize them now!

Re: Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

Literally... Children...ambushing cops with rocks and winning.... Like 6 year olds and shit!

Literally. No joke.

Re: Anti-Police Riot in Edgewood Courts

11 Alive says:

"Police say two individuals were arrested on the scene; however, investigators will open an investigation to identify, arrest and charge everyone involved in the incident."
