Emory President James Wagner Forced to Make Public Statements Regarding Sodexo and Student Arrests

On May 11th, 2011, Emory President James Wagner held a public forum in response to pressure from students and faculty that he address the issues of labor rights regarding Sodexo employees on Emory's campus and the recent arrests of 7 students who were demonstrating against Sodexo.
Afterwards, members of Students and Workers in Solidarity (SWS) said that they felt that Wagner was not just skirting the real issues in his public address, but that he was also "telling straight up lies", as Misty Novitch puts it, about the events preceding the arrests.
There was a palpable feeling of anger and distrust towards the administration coming from faculty and staff who were present at the forum, which was attended by a full auditorium of around 200 people despite being held after graduation when most students had already left. Although everybody in the room was certainly not in agreement, it was clear that Wagner was on the defensive and was forced to apologize or make excuses for his decisions several times.
While most of the forum unfortunately focused on the students who were arrested, Wagner was forced to comment on the situation with Sodexo's treatment of it's employees. He continues to frame the conflict in terms of some kind of struggle between "two bohemoth organizations" (hand gestures included), Sodexo and the Service Empoyees International Union (SEIU), and continues to characterize the members of SWS as pawns or minions of this mega-union. Wagner claims that everything is wine and roses as far as Sodexo's treatment of it's empoyees goes and so far has made no commitments to affect any real change relating to Emory's cafeteria workers status on the campus, nor to the University's contract with Sodexo.
This forum may have been unproductive, but SWS members take it as a sign of progress that the administration has been forced to hold this public forum at all, and that the promise of more of such events in the future, which the administration has agreed will take place, serve only to bring the issue of labor rights and inequality on Emory's campus in to the light.
