Activists shut down power plant construction site, 27 Arrested

Early Monday morning dozens of concerned community members from Palm Beach County and all over the nation put their bodies on the line to halt construction of FPL's West County Energy Center (WCEC), demanding energy efficiency, truly clean, renewable energy and a moratorium on development in south Florida. Everglades Earth First! blocked the main entrance to the WCEC site, a proposed massive 3800 MW gas-fired power plant that would emit 12 million tons of CO2, a leading greenhouse gas, every year. The plant is currently under construction despite ongoing legal challenges to the plant's needed permits and certification, which have been spearheaded by the local Palm Beach County Environmental Coalition.

A dozen activists locked themselves together through metal pipes as 200 supporters rallied around them. The blockade stopped work on the construction site for six hours before a total of 27 people were arrested.

Venezuela: Against (B)oligarchy, demagogy and corruption. Autonomous struggle from the ground up!

* Issue #52 of El Libertario is out In its editorial we reaffirm the commitment of this voice of Venezuelan anarchism to maintain a critical viewpoint on the country's realities, as well as our stand in solidarity with the struggle for liberty and equality.

[TN: (B)oligarchy is a play with words meaning Bolivarian oligarchy]

The year begins and it's already clear that the electoral circus will be used once again to tame the social struggle in Venezuela, a script routinely applied with success for the last 10 years. Elections for governors, state representatives and mayors are set for November 16, so the official politicos and the opposition started campaigning right after the Constitutional Referendum of December 2nd, again with the sneaky proposal to postpone collective demands in order to be elected to the contested positions. Both sides continue to sell the canard that given the importance of these elections to regain freedom or to advance the revolution nothing matters more in 2008 than to clear the road to victory at the ballot, after which these enlightened representatives of the people will work tirelessly and expertly to satisfy the electors' demands.

Do not Work for the Department of Defense

You've been studying for years, working
on your technical, scientific or mathematical degree. The time of
studying is coming to an end and you realize that you must begin
seeking employment. A glance at the Help Wanted ads reveals an
assortment of opportunities. Many of the most interesting, it would
appear, include the requirement of "citizenship" or the
successful acquisition of a security clearance. You imagine yourself
as an intelligence agent. You imagine yourself as a software
engineer working on cutting edge research for a defense contractor.
Would it hurt to at least try? Perhaps you will get that security
clearance. These positions often pay well.

The truth is, working for the
Department of Defense or an intelligence agency could be the worst
mistake you will ever make. On a moral basis, there is no
wiggle-room. If you choose to work for the military or an
intelligence agency, you have made a mistake, for you have offered
yourself up to assist in murder in exchange for pay. There is no
lower calling for a human being. However, let us suppose that you
are not a moral person to begin with and this, at least at the
moment, does not matter to you. Does taking a job which requires a
security clearance have practical negative effects on your life that
will persist beyond your tenure with shady government agencies and
their corporate enablers?

The 2008 Elections and The Peace Movement

Recent surveys show that American voters have a
critical view of how things are going in the country, and that they are
confident that the next American President will have the power to
change much of what is wrong. Voters begin this election year with a
grim assessment of the status quo. Roughly three-fourths say the
country is on “the wrong track.”

Some say the
Democrats don’t have the spine to improve things. In my view,
progressives have to push the Democrats to end the war, restore our
civil liberties, particularly the right of “habeas corpus,” and to
protect our environment.

In short, even if the Democrats win, the progressive
peace movement needs to continue to “bear witness” to the crimes that
our government, the CIA, and the Pentagonians are committing in foreign
lands against people that have never harmed or attacked America. We
must continue to protest, to act outside the electoral process, to
stand up for our rights, speak our conscience, defend human rights,
even if our so called “leaders” can’t.

Yet, I
agree with those progressives who argue the need to strategically vote
“democratic” in the elections - just to get some room to maneuver. The
American unions, and most civil rights and environmental groups,
consider it imperative to get the Democrats elected and in the White
House, and they are certainly a part of progressive America. They may
be right, given the lack of any genuine practical alternatives.

need to vote for the Democratic nominee and get the neo-cons and the
Republicans out of the White House. I know, I know - we have all heard
this sorry story before, we have all been betrayed before, and the
historical record of the party over the last few decades makes us

Another Killing Spree in Mesopotamia: “Pacifying” Mosul

Another Killing Spree in Mesopotamia: “Pacifying” Mosul

By Felicity Arbuthnot

Global Research, February 13, 2008
UN Observer

“When I hear anyone talk of Culture, I reach for my revolver.” Hermann Goering (1893-1946.)

In the Orwellian world of the United States military, when a killing spree in Mesopotamia is embarked upon, it is called an “Iraq Pacification Operation'”. There have been hundreds of these (I abandoned counting at three hundred and eighty, with numerous more to go.)

Each 'pacification' has a name which brings a glimpse into a very strange mindset: “Operation Devil Thrust”, “Operation Terminator”, “Operation Scorpion Sting”, “Operation Sidewinder”, “Operation Roaring Tiger”, “Operation All American Tiger”, “Operation Panther Squeeze”, “Operation Warhorse Whirlwind”, “Operation Resolute Sword”, “Operation Wolverine Feast”, “Operation Arrowhead Ripper”, “Operations 'Geronimo Strike', 'Rat Trap' and 'Grizzly Forced Entry'”. And from a porn show near you: Operations “Squeeze Play”, “Triple Play”, “Therapist” and “Tombstone Thrust”. ( )

Seemingly there are even “insurgent” cows, if “Operation Cowpens” lived up to its name. Al Cow-aeda, maybe?

Perhaps the oddest is: '”Operation Suicide Kings”. Suicide bombers of course, were unheard of in Iraq until the invasion. The title is no doubt a coincidence in macho “bring 'em on”, bragging. None however are titles which conjure up the joyously liberated, reveling gratefully, savoring their freedom and democracy.

RCP Swings Back at Maoist Critics

RCP's newspaper Revolution published its first response
to Maoist critics who published the "9 Letters to Our Comrades".

Maoist "9 Letters" polemic targets the RCP's escalating cult of
Avakian, its failures of organizing, its self-deceptive approach to
"truth," its view of religion and several other key concerns.
For almost two months, the RCP has been officially silent. Now, here is their
response entitled "A Matter of Basic Orientation -- a Message from the
Revolutionary Communist Party."

The full response is available here:

Barack Obama - White Power in Black Face!

"He hasn't said the word black out of his mouth, not even to talk about the color of his suit or his shoes! He cannot address the suffering of African people."

Check out this first in an ongoing series of vignettes by African People's Socialist Party Chairman Omali Yeshitela on the U.S. presidential candidacy of Barack Obama.

"When you talk about a presidential election where they're going to spend more than a billion dollars, a lot of forces with a whole bunch of money are promoting him for their own reasons. Not because of what's important to Africans, but because of what's important to this element of the ruling class.

"So he's important, because at this time of crisis, where you might be looking for revolution, where you might be willing to talk about overturning the system, he brings Africans back into the safe embrace of the Democratic Party."

Clinton and Obama: Failures on War and Global Warming

Clinton and Obama: Failures on War and Global Warming

Today, every national academy of science of the industrialized world recognizes human caused global warming as a fact. These include the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences who explicitly use the word "consensus" on the issue.

The problem of global warming is one that will, and is, devastating the planet’s environment, causing mass extinction of species while also destroying agricultural and habitable land through rising oceans, more severe hurricanes, droughts, more unpredictable weather, increases in tropical diseases, year round freezing weather with a potential ice age in the northern hemisphere combined with higher temperatures closer to the equator, and the potential of runaway global warming with the melting of the ocean’s methane hydride that could actually cause the extinction of the human species.

Despite the severity of the problem, and despite the United States being the biggest contributor to global warming in the world, the U.S. government and corporate leaders continue to do worse than nothing, through blocking and sabotaging all potential solutions for the past fifty years up until the present. This is due to the massive profits that continue to be made by the big oil corporations, and the political strength they have in being able to buy the politicians in Washington.

Operation Desert Slaughter: Thoughts on Holocaust Memorial Day

Operation Desert Slaughter
Thoughts on Holocaust Memorial Day.

Global Research, January 28, 2008

It is seventeen years since America and Britain embarked on their 'Final Solution' for the population of Iraq.

forty two day carpet bombing, enjoined by thirty two other countries,
against a country of just twenty five million souls, with a youthful,
conscript army, with broadly half the population under sixteen, and no
air force, was just the beginning of a United Nations led, global siege
of near mediaeval ferocity.

Having, as James Baker boasted they would, reduced 'Iraq to a pre-industrial age',
the country was denied all normality : trade, aid, telecommunications,
power, sanitation, water repairs, seeds, foods, pharmaceuticals,
medical equipment.

Protest pro war on Iran and Sudan JCRC mega meeting

may be the most disgusting gathering going on the "USA" this month.
Info, speaker list and schedule below.
JCPA is the national
organization of local JCRC's. At this conference last year, the CJP /
JCRC-Boston leadership tried to organize everyone to push for war
against Iran. I hope a lot of people in Atlanta will protest this.
JCRCs were started in the build up to US military action in Europe in the 1930s to monitor anti war activism, promoted the us involvment in world war 2 to and combat the perception that american jewish groups were behind it.

The Dutch Parliament held a mock vote for the US presidency and Barak Obama won by a landslide. A recent Dutch opinion poll found that voters had little opposition to a female or homosexual Prime Minister, but the majority would be opposed to a Jewish or Muslim candidate, or one over 70 years old. From CUBA- The US 2008 Primary election will soon surpass the cost of the entire 2004 Presidential election. A Tennessee company has applied for a license to import and process radioactive waste from Europe.

How Green Is the Toyota Prius?

Dustin Hoffman, Larry David and other Hollywood celebrities tout the Toyota Prius as the real thing for the environmentally conscious.

They and many regular folks see the hybrid car as a step toward solving the problems of pollution and global warming. As a result, some go green with envy when a neighbor buys a Prius.

But is the Prius all it's cracked up to be? Let's take a look.

Toyota developed an innovative power train that combines an electric motor and a gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine. This enables the Prius to provide lower emissions and higher fuel economy than regular cars. By Gene Koprowski,2933,316604,00.html

working on a thesis at University at Buffalo about feminism vs.
post-feminism (if such a thing exists). As part of my preliminary

The survey should take 10-15 minutes and is essential to the research.

His American Dream: Michael Bloomberg

The Bloomberg-for-president scenario starts with the mayor's growing sense of himself as a man of destiny. Throw in the country's disgust with the two parties, add a half-a-billion bucks, and you've got yourself a race.

The survival of the planet and the stability of the dollar seem more likely with Michael Bloomberg as president. The major candidates see "more boots on the ground" as a panacea. The melting of the dollar and military overreach have brought the US to the edge of the abyss. Take power from the Bush crime family by drafting Mike!
