Atlanta, Georgia February 1, 2008

On February 19, 2008 Atlanta WAND will be presenting its 6th Annual Real State of the Union with Jay Bookman and Reverend Dr. Joseph E. Lowery. Jay Bookman will be giving his talk on the “real” state of the union and Dr. Lowery will be responding to Jay’s talk. This year Jay's talk will be around the theme: Chickens Coming Home to Roost.

Each year the talk and response have been more interesting, enlightening, and timely. With the state that our country is in as we move into the final stages of the current administration, we anticipate this year’s event will be even more interesting, enlightening, and timely.

The event is brought to you by Atlanta WAND and hosted this year by Rev. Dr. Gerald L. Durley and Providence Missionary Baptist Church.

Picket line in New York City protests repression of striking miners in Cananea, MX

Picket line in New York City protests repression of striking miners in Cananea, MX

NEW YORK, 12 January -- The attack by over 800 state and federal police and Mexican army soldiers, aimed at dislodging striking miners from Cananea (Sonora state), was answered with a protest picket in New York. In front of the Mexican consulate, some 20 demonstrators proclaimed their solidarity with the mineworkers, who have been on strike since July 30 against terrible safety conditions at the Cananea complex and against government attacks on the workers.

"Ejército fuera, policía fuera, viva, viva la huelga minera" ("Army get out, police get out, long live the miners' strike!"), chanted the protesters, "La lucha obrera no tiene fronteras" ("the workers struggle knows no borders"). The picket was organized by the Internationalist Group, U.S. section of the League for the Fourth International, and drew participation from unionists from the UFT (NYC public school teachers), the PSC (City University professors), and the Teamsters.

Christmas message 2007: Against war, poverty, racism and exclusion ''illegals''

Christmas-message 2007

Dear Readers,

''"And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn."

At Christmas Eve, I read in the Dutch news, between the daily messages about wars, occupations and other human rights violations, two messages, which stroke me

The first mentioned the record money, the average ''Dutch'' had spent for Christmas-shopping, 700 million euro, 15 percent more as last year

The second message referred to the statement of the Israeli military Prosecutor, that Israel hadn't made an illegal use of the clusterbombs in South-Lebanon, because they should be thrown in a ''non populated'' area and were mentioned in the battle against the Hezbollah rocket-attacks

Therefore the commanders, who have used those clustermunitions, will not be persecuted before the Court

I wonder, whether the Israeli Prosecutor can sleep at night, thinking of the daily Lebanese civilian victims, caused by the landmines, which are the result of non-exploded clustermunitions.

Fencing-Out the "Aliens": another lesson of ignorance, futility and profiteering

"The ongoing promotion of a bad idea does NOT make it a better option!" --- Dr. Peter Stern

Despite the majority of public opinion AGAINST building the border fence between Mexico and The United States, it appears Americans will get the fence whether or not they want it or even if it won't work keeping out illegal immigrants, which it won't.

http://www.woai.com:80/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=48d27b13-b507-4ef7-8458-f7a52310494f

Like so many other urgent issues, our elected officials refuse to look for rational and significant resolutions for the increasing and overwhelming numbers of illegals entering the U.S. every year.

What no one seems interested in looking at:

As the 2008 Election year moves into high gear, most of the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates have adopted an anti-immigrant and anti-Mexican strategy for their campaigns. The message of the candidates is outlining an agenda that will increase border enforcement and supporting legislation that will restrict the rights of millions of immigrants.

People's Movement Assembly

Start: 01/26/2008 - 8:00pm

On Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, there will be global actions against injustice
in response to a call by the World Social Forum for the peoples of the world
to act in unison against war, poverty, exploitation, and environmental
degradation.

Atlanta, host city of the first US Social Forum, will be the
venue for a statewide People's Movement Assembly, beginning with a
caravan and rally at the state capitol.

Initiated by the organizers of the
annual Poor People's Day events at the
Capitol and inspired by 2008 being
the 40th anniversary of the historic Poor
People's Campaign for Economic
Justice launched by Dr. King, this multi-pronged
effort seeks to bring the
voice, aspirations, needs and demands of millions
of working and poor people
to the Georgia Capitol.

Following the caravan and rally, participants will
meet to exchange views,
plan ongoing actions and cement relationships and
networks.
Hundreds of volunteers are needed throughout the state to mobilize
their
communities.

New Films from South Lebanon

The anarchist film collective "a-films" announces three new videos from South Lebanon. In October 2007, a-films did video workshops in Bourj ash-Shamali Refugee Camp and the village of Siddiqine.

"What Future for the Youth" (18min)
Emigration is a widely discussed topic not only in Siddiqine, but all over Lebanon. Siddiqine was hit hard during the war in 2006 and more than half of the village was destroyed, which lead to further social and economic pressures resulting in a stronger desire amongst many residents to emigrate. In the film, villagers voice their concerns, hopes and assessments regarding the situation both at home and abroad and speak about their wishes to engage the hardships they face by trying to go abroad.
