Free the Cuban Five!

Attorney Leonard Weinglass:

"There are 40 pages of ideological prejudice in the
new ruling from
Atlanta"

ARLEEN RODRIGUEZ DERIVET

A three-judge panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals of Atlanta upheld Wednesday the guilty verdicts of the Cuban Five, prisoners in the United States since 1998. It also vacated the sentences of three of the men, ordering a new sentencing in Miami. The sentences of Rene Gonzalez (15 years) and Gerardo Hernandez (two life terms plus 15 years) were maintained. In the case of Hernandez, the panel voted 2-1. A 16-page [minority] opinion of Judge Phyllis Kravitch states that the government did not present sufficient evidence to prove Gerardo's guilt in the charge of conspiracy to commit murder.

The cases of Ramon Labanino (life sentence plus 18 years), Fernando Gonzalez (19 years) and Antonio Guerrero (life sentence plus 10 years) were sent to the Florida Court for re-sentencing. It will be Judge Joan Lenard who will announce a hearing to issue the new sentencing. Lenard was the presiding judge who, in 2001, issued the harsh sentences to the Cuban Five. The 99-page ruling of the Appeals Court of Atlanta, which explicitly favors the government position, was drafted in a politically charged language unusual for legal texts. It states that the defense arguments in their appeal "are meritless."

BirdBlast to Promote Alternative Media, Say Organizers

ATLANTA – A public celebration commemorating The Great Speckled Bird, Atlanta’s progressive “underground” paper of the 1960’s and 70’s, will take place Saturday, May 24 from 2 to 10 p.m. at the B Complex, 1272 Murphy Avenue SW.  But the “BirdBlast” will not be just an exercise in nostalgia, organizers say.

“While we celebrate the work of The Bird, many problems we wrote about 40 years ago are still with us,” said Bob Goodman, a former Bird writer.  “The US destruction of Vietnam is now the US destruction of Iraq.  The Cold War was replaced by the so-called ‘War on Terror,’ and the military-industrial complex Ike warned us about has grown more powerful than even he could have imagined.  Unarmed Afro-American men are still murdered by trigger-happy cops and intolerance against immigrants, Arabs andMuslims is on the rise.  We need independent media more than ever to combat government propaganda and the biased corporate media.”

Promoting independent media is a main goal of the Bird Blast, Goodman said.  The keynote speaker at 5 p.m. will be Amy Goodman (no relation), host of Democracy Now!, a daily hour-long news and interview program.  She will also sign copies of her latest book, Standing Up to the Madness, Ordinary Heroes in Extraordinary Times, which recounts the stories of citizens who have successfully challenged the government.

ATLANTA – Former staff members, sellers, readers and fellow travelers of The Great Speckled Bird, Atlanta’s radical, freaky, “underground” paper of the 1960’s and 70’s, will gather Saturday, May 24, for a 40th anniversary celebration. The “BirdBlast,” which is open to the public, will be from 2 to 10 p.m. at the B Complex, 1272 Murphy Avenue SW.

Hundreds from metro Atlanta and around the country are expected for the event, the first Bird get-together since the paper’s 20th anniversary party in 1988, said Stephanie Coffin of Atlanta, a Bird cofounder. It will include exhibits of Bird graphics and articles, organized by themes; speakers; live music; jugglers; fire sculptures and more. Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! will speak at 5 p.m. Bird alumna State Senator Nan Orrock and other former staffers will also speak. (More info: www.greatspeckledbird.org

As an appetizer for the main event, an exhibit of Bird covers, graphics and articles will be on display May 5-18 at the Fulton County Public Library (main branch), fourth floor, 1 Margaret Mitchell Square (intersection of Carnegie Way and Forsyth Street in downtown Atlanta).

The Bird grew out of an anti-Vietnam War newsletter published in 1967 by a group of New Left activists at Emory University which included Coffin and her husband Tom. To reach a wider audience, they joined forces with students from other local colleges, political activists from the Southern Student Organizing Committee, VISTA and other organizations. The Bird chirped for the first time in March 1968.
