Learn how to build a web page in HTML5! This class will be for beginners and for anyone who wants to brush up on their HTML and CSS skills.

This class is the second in a series that will span from basic HTML and CSS to intermediate PHP and MySQL, with the ultimate goal of providing class-goers with the skills that they need to build and maintain website applications. Presently, relatively few people know code (of any variety), and there are a number of barriers to the learning process (cultural, gender, accessibility, etc.). This series aims to break through those barriers as best as possible and empower our communities with a much-needed skill set.

In the last class, Learning Code: Introduction to HTML & CSS, attendees learned the basics of HTML and CSS, including:

  • The structure of a web page.
  • Document type declaration.
  • Basic HTML elements.
  • What actually happens in cyberspace when you visit a web page.
  • Creating and including separate CSS documents.
  • Calling CSS classes and ID’s in HTML documents.
  • In-line styling.

In this class, we are going to apply some of what we learned to build a web page. In fact we will be building at least three web pages:

  1. A single-column page.
  2. A two-column page with a left sidebar.
  3. A two-column page with a right sidebar.

Class-goers should brush up on the following basics:

Learning code isn’t very hard once you get your foot in the door. That said, if the above list seems confusing, if you weren’t able to attend the last class, or if you have questions before, during, or after this class, don’t worry! Especially when it comes to coding, every question is important. This class is open to everyone, newbies and veterans alike (although the latter group probably won’t gain much).
